Why Morse Code MP3 Ringtones?
By Avery Parker
These days customized ringtones for cellphones are a staple of modern life. It's hard to be in any public place without hearing somebodies phone come alive with one of the latest tunes. When I first got a phone that would play mp3 ringtones I was somewhat eager to enter my contacts and assign ringtones, but it quickly became a challenging endeavor. My wireless provider is verizon and they sell ringtones in their online store. Well, they've improved things some, but initially they were several dollars for a few USES of a ringtone. The pricing was close to 10 dollars for unlimited use of a ringtone. This pricing quickly led me to sites where you could edit and upload your own sound clip. I still struggled to find songs that I wanted to identify people with (and that I wouldn't mind starting up to play anytime I had my phone with me.) Since the point of the ringtone is to identify who is calling, I thought it would be nice if the phone would announce who was calling. I tried this, but in addition to it being hard to understand the synthesized voice, the pronunciation was many times less than ideal and there were times that I didn't like the idea of a voice announcement if the contact was a client, etc. So, finally I've settled on Morse code ringtones. Generating mp3 files from morse code is trivial (in fact I've made over 100,000 mp3 files from morse code for many familiar names, placenames and initials.) I was a bit rusty at understanding morse when I started and generated it at 4 different speeds ranging from a slow pace around 5 Words per minute up to a rate of 20 words per minute. Since starting to use these as ringtones (and in the process of generating them) I've brushed up on my understanding of morse and hae needed to move to the fast version of the ringtones. In fact, I think that you would learn to recognize the morse code ringtones very quickly if you give them a try. You might start converting a few contacts at a time, but you'll quickly start figuring out the pattern of dits and dahs that make up your contacts names. I'm happy with morse code mp3 ringtones on my phone because I can not only distinguish between an incoming text message and voicemail, but it let's me have an easy way to assign a unique sound to everyone in my contact list. I only wish cell phone makers would allow tapping of morse code input instead of hunting through the keys of a tiny number pad for texting input.
