Using DVDs for Lanugage learning

By Avery Parker

DVD's provide many advantages over movies on older tapes. For those that are studying languages one of the great benefits is the availability of subtitles and multiple language tracks. In the United States for instance most movies are distributed with an English language track as well as a secondary track that is usually either French or Spanish. Some titles have English, French and Spanish audio tracks and I've seen those with Portuguese as well.

I made use of this in my study of Spanish. I would start out watching it with English audio and Spanish subtitles. This basically had me reading the translation of the movie. As I got a bit more comfortable with my understanding of Spanish I switched over and started listening to the Spanish Audio while keeping the English language subtitles.

This seemed to work pretty well, you should understand though that translations are about translating an idea instead of translating exactly word for word. After I've seen a movie that way, I would move on to Spanish language audio and Spanish language subtitles. This can be tricky because you are listening and reading. Sometimes you have to make use of the pause button in the early phase of your learning. Again you will notice that the subtitles don't match the audio exactly. It can be entertaining at times to see where they've made changes for the subtitles versus the audio.

The final phase of learning is to go ahead and just listen to the audio soundtrack without the subtitles and see how you do. If you're doing well you will be able to catch most all of the dialog. If your doing REALLY well you could probably transcribe parts of it as you watch.

As you work through studying a language this way it might be a good idea to keep a notebook and pen handy to write down any words that you don't understand. This way you can go back and look them up afterwards and study them for the next time you watch.

Unfortunately, DVD makers have chosen a region encoding system that limits the choices we have in acquiring and watching movies with different language content, but things are changing and the internet gives many opportunities as well for us to use the same techniques with online videos.
