Tips for Success in Choosing a Language to Study
By Avery Parker
Learning a new language is something that many people want to do. Many people would like to learn a second or third language and there are few that actually succeed. I want to present today a few things you can do to make sure your efforts will be successful. The first and most important thing to consider is the following: What is your motivation for learning a second language? The stronger the motivation, such as a need for business or to communicate with family and friends is likely to assist you in making a good deal of progress. If on the other hand you just want to learn because it sounds neat or you want to be able to say that you speak another language, your enthusiasm and interest may not last as long as it needs to achieve your goal. If your interest is for travel reasons, be sure to start your study early enough to give yourself a reasonable chance to make some progress before you leave. For example, don't expect to master enough Russian in one week to carry you through a trip. You need to plan ahead, although the amount of time will depend on the language. Some languages require more time and study than others and you may find information online that rates them. Another important thing to consider is whether or not you have easy access to reading and listening materials in your chosen language and whether or not teaching materials are available. Along these lines are also the availability of support groups of others that may be studying the language, or may already speak it to give you conversational practice. Choosing an obscure language that you have no resources to acquire materials to acquire vocabulary is setting yourself up for more than just the challenge of learning a language, you have added the challenge of obtaining resources to work with. Time is perhaps the most important element to consider. Do you have enough time to devote to a daily practice of your new language? Learning a language is a long term commitment and you really need to plan on a little bit of time each day. It can be as little as 30 minutes to an hour, but remember that this is going to be a long term commitment. Just like many things, if you skip a day or two here and there that's all right, you just need to make sure that it's part of your routine. The bottom line in all of this is to set yourself up for success. The internet gives us many great possibilities for resource material in many languages that previously were inaccessible, but take a serious look at your motivation, available time and resources. If you can honestly evaluate these and make sure to avoid setting too high expectations you will have great success in your language learning. It can be very fun and interesting to learn a new language, but it's not an overnight task. Good luck in your learning journey! |
