The First Step in Family History Research

By Avery Parker

The first thing that anyone interested in working on a family history is to write down the firsthand information that you know about yourself and your parents and their family. From this starting point it's a good idea to start interviewing older family members to see if you can fill in gaps in your knowledge.

To keep track of the information you will accumulate you can do it the old fashioned way on paper if you like. If you do this make one sheet of paper for each individual. Record their full name, their parents names, birth date and location and any other information you can. (Marriage information, death information, biographical sketches if possible.) If you don't know some bit of information, you might want to leave a blank for this in anticipation of entering the information later.

If you want to use a computer, you can keep a small amount of information in a spreadsheet or using a word processor, but the best way to keep track of your genealogy on a computer is with specialized genealogy software. Some programs are freely available.

Try to get more information than dates and places to try to make a more interesting sketch of each individual in your budding family tree. You'll be surprised how much information you can sketch out with a bit of time and a few relatives that are willing to talk about the family history.
