North Carolina Vital Records for Genealogy Research
By Avery Parker
Vital records such as birth, death and marriage records can be an invaluable resource for the family historian. For those that are researching in North Carolina it is worth knowing when each of these types of records began to be officially recorded. In the case of Birth Records, North Carolina has only been officially keeping these kinds of records since 1913. There are some cases where there could be an exception, but they were officially required from 1913 on. You will not likely find any official birth record in the state of North Carolina predating this. Many of these records are indexed at the county level, but can also be requested from the State Department of Vital Records. Death Records have been officially kept in North Carolina since 1913 as well. Records between 1913 and 1955 can be found at the North Carolina State Archives, while the counties do have an index available for deaths recorded in the county. Marriage records in North Carolina date back to 1868 officially and can be found in the Register of Deeds Office in the County where the marriage was recorded. There are some records available prior to this date. Some of the prior records are in the form of Marriage bonds. This will vary by the county. Unfortunately for those looking for the earlier Marriage records will be disappointed to find that there are many counties, particularly in the Western part of the state that suffered losses of records due to courthouse fires. Most of these events took place during the Civil War and reconstruction era and since they predated the official records there were no duplicates stored in Raleigh, the state capital. Unfortunately many of those early Marriage records are lost, as well as any Wills that would have been kept at the local Register of Deeds. There are certainly other records available for North Carolina genealogists to research as they explore their North Carolina ancestry, but I will detail some of those in another family history article. |
