Increasing your PC Performance with More Memory

By Avery Parker

It's unfortunate, but most new computers come with less memory than is really necessary for good performance. Typically new computers are shipped with a bare minimum of memory to satisfy the requirements of the operating system installed. If you install and run additional software it can render your PC sluggish and slow responding.

It's also unfortunate but with Windows, keeping up with security updates for Internet Explorer and new service packs has the same effect that trying to run additional software. It seems that each version of Internet Explorer and each service pack requires a bit more from the hardware than the last version.

For these reasons many people have seen significant performance improvements by installing additional memory to their system. It's an easy task and tools like that at crucial.com can help you to determine just what kind of memory your system takes.

I would suggest at least 1GB of memory total for a system with the latest version of Windows XP. The exact amount depends on the type of work you intend to do. If you are using Windows Vista you probably should have more memory than 1 GB for basic day to day tasks.

If you're running a linux operating system 512MB is usually the bare minimum of memory that you should be using and depending on your desktop environment you might find a better experience with 1GB of memory there as well.

Heavier tasks such as video editing, audio editing or working with large graphic files can require more memory and you should take that into account as you shop for memory. If you only have 256MB of memory though and are trying to run Windows XP you will find a memory upgrade will greatly enhance the performance of your system.
