Fixing Problems with Norton Antivirus by removing and reinstalling
By Avery Parker
Antivirus is an essential part of the toolkit of desktop software for users of Microsoft Windows today. Many times however, that software can have it's own problems. I have seen this many times with Norton's Symantec Antivirus and most every time I've seen a serious problem with this antivirus package it has been solved by an uninstall and reinstall of the software. The kinds of errors that I'm talking about include components not successfully loading and constantly reporting an error state with some part of the software. Of course, it is important to always follow the software makers suggestions for solving an issue, one should first search through the support documentation for Symantec/Norton and verify that they have tried all of the appropriate suggestions. If none of the support documents have helped to resolve the issue you will need to uninstall and reinstall your software. First make sure that you have all of the tools you will need. You will need your license information (symantec/norton lately have account information stored online, so make sure you have your username and password for your account.) You will also need something to reinstall from. In this case it will either be a downloaded file or an install cd. Look to the control panel in the add remove programs area. (Depending on the version of windows it may be named slightly differently, instead of programs look for items related to software.) From here you should be able to uninstall every component related to Norton or Symantec that you find. At this point if everything has been successful, attempt to reinstall the Norton/Symantec software. If you are still having issues there is a more complete way to remove the software. This is called an antivirus removal tool and most software makers provide a free tool to help clean out every trace possible of their software install in case there is anything interfering with a reinstall. I will provide a link to the removal tool for norton/symentec at the bottom of this article as well as a page that lists removal tools for various other antivirus vendors. You simply run the symantec antivirus removal tool and let it clean out everything. Now you will have a clean slate to reinstall your antivirus software. Hopefully this will have solved the issues you were having. If this doesn't you will need to contact your antivirus vendors support for more detailed information on the problem. |
